Festival food guides: Navratri, Karva Chauth, Diwali and more
Festival food has a calendar. Navratri asks for vrat thali dishes and, on Ashtami or Navami, kanjak prasad. Karva Chauth starts before sunrise with sargi. Diwali brings sweet boxes for family and office gifting, and Gurpurab brings langar. The guides on this shelf sit on the day they matter, and each opens with the answer: what to cook or order, how much, and by when.
A Navratri vrat thali uses kuttu, singhare or rajgira flour, samak rice, sabudana, potatoes, fruit and dairy, salted only with sendha namak and cooked without onion or garlic. In 2026 the nine days run from Sunday 11 to Monday 19 October. Kanjak plates are separate: 100–120 g halwa, 80–100 g chana and 2–3 puris per girl.
Plan one plate per girl: 100–120 g of halwa, 80–100 g of chana and 2–3 puris. For 21 girls that is 2.1–2.5 kg of halwa, 1.7–2.1 kg of chana and 42–63 puris; for 51 girls, 5.1–6.1 kg, 4.1–5.1 kg and 102–153 puris. Approximate, before any prasad sweets.
A sargi thali is the pre-dawn meal before Karva Chauth, and it usually holds a sweet, fruit, dry fruit, a crisp snack such as mathri, a paratha or puri, and milk or coconut water. In 2026 Karva Chauth is on Thursday 29 October. Plan 8 to 10 items so the thali is filling and not just sweet.
A good Diwali party menu is short: 1 or 2 starters, 1 or 2 mains, a rice dish, a bread and 1 or 2 sweets. Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday 8 November 2026, so parties fall between 6 and 11 November. Ordering the mains and sweets is easier than cooking for 15 or more guests.
A Diwali sweet box usually mixes two or three sweets, commonly kaju katli, motichoor ladoo and khoya barfi, in a 500 g or 1 kg box. Diwali 2026 is on Sunday 8 November. Baljeet quotes the box mix and quantity once you send the number of boxes, the sweets you prefer and the delivery date.
