What is never cooked on the Jain line?
Jain food follows ahimsa. A root is pulled up with the whole plant and the small life in the soil around it, and honey is taken from bees. So all of these stay out of every Jain pot and every Jain counter.
- Onionpyaaz
- Garliclehsun
- Potatoaloo
- Carrotgajar
- Beetrootchukandar
- Radishmooli
- Honeyshahad
- Other rootsfresh ginger, arbi, shakarkandi
Ginger goes in as dry sonth, turmeric as dried powder. Raw banana stands in for potato.
What replaces onion and garlic? How is the Jain line kept apart from the other kitchens?
A Jain guest cannot see inside the pot, so the rules have to hold before the food leaves the stove. This is how the line runs.

01Can the Jain food be served before sunset?
Yes, on request. Tell us the sunset time on your date and we plan the cooking and the service so the Jain counter is done before it. to be confirmed by Baljeet
02Are any root vegetables used in the Jain dishes?
No. Onion, garlic, potato, carrot, beetroot, radish, fresh ginger, arbi and sweet potato are all left out. Raw banana, lauki, cauliflower, capsicum and paneer carry the menu instead.
03What replaces onion and garlic in Jain gravies?
Hing (asafoetida) gives the sharp note garlic would. Tomato, cashew, melon seeds and curd give the gravy its body, and dry ginger powder (sonth) gives warmth.
04Do you cater during Paryushan?
Yes. Rules in Paryushan differ from family to family, for example no green leafy vegetables or food cooked only on certain days, so we ask what your family keeps and plan the menu from that.
05Is honey used in any Jain sweet?
No. Sweets on the Jain line are made with sugar, khand or jaggery. to be confirmed by Baljeet
