What goes into a Karva Chauth sargi thali?

A sargi thali holds a sweet, fresh fruit, dry fruit, something fried and crisp such as mathri, a filling main such as paratha or puri, and a drink such as milk or coconut water. It is eaten before sunrise, so the thali is built to keep a person going through a long day of fasting.

Sargi is traditionally given to the fasting woman by her mother-in-law, so the contents often follow the family's own habit. The table below is the common list from published Karwa Chauth guides, not a fixed rule.

When is Karva Chauth in 2026?

Karva Chauth in 2026 falls on Thursday 29 October. Sargi is eaten in the early morning of that day, before sunrise, so the thali has to be ready the night before.

The moonrise time depends on the city, so check the time listed for Chandigarh or Panchkula with your pandit or a panchang before you plan the evening.

What should a sargi thali have to keep you full all day?

Put protein, fibre and slow-digesting carbohydrate in the thali, not only sweets. Dry fruit, curd or milk, a paratha and fruit last longer than a plate of mithai, which gives a quick lift and a quick drop.

Many women keep the fast without water, so a glass of water, coconut water or milk just before sunrise matters, and so does leaving out very salty or very spicy food that makes you thirsty.

  • Choose one sweet and one fruit-based dish, not four sweets.
  • Add a handful of mixed dry fruit and a fresh fruit such as banana or pomegranate.
  • Include one filling item: a ghee paratha, a stuffed paratha or puri with dry aloo.
  • Keep the thali mild: little chilli, little salt.
  • End with milk, coconut water or a cup of tea.

How do you pack a sargi thali as a gift?

Pack it in a thali or box with the dry and long-keeping items on one side and the fresh items added just before handing it over. Mathri, dry fruit and packed sweets can be bought days ahead, while fruit, milk and parathas are done the evening before.

For sweets bought by the kilo, count the pieces rather than guessing: a kilo of besan ladoo is about 20–24 pieces and a kilo of kaju katli about 45–50 pieces, so one or two pieces per thali is plenty beside the other items. The bulk sweets page lists how long each sweet keeps.
