Mehndi and haldi food menu: veg ideas for both functions

6 min read

The short answer

A mehndi and a haldi both want light, easy-to-hold vegetarian food: chaat, mini samosas, paneer tikka, fruit, cold drinks and chai, then a simple lunch or dinner if the function runs long. Plan 2 to 3 snack pieces a guest, keep it finger food, and book a wedding caterer for the full menu.

What food suits a mehndi function?

Finger food that can be eaten with one hand suits a mehndi best, because the bride and her friends sit for hours with henna drying on their palms and cannot hold a plate.

Popular choices are chaat (dahi puri, papdi chaat, aloo tikki), mini samosas, cocktail kachori, paneer tikka, hara bhara kebab and spring rolls, with a welcome drink such as jaljeera, aam panna, shikanji, thandai or lassi. Hot chai and pakoras suit a winter afternoon.

Let the henna artists and the bride eat first, and have someone feed her if her hands are wet. That one habit matters more than any dish on the list.

What food suits a haldi function?

A haldi is usually a daytime function, so it suits a lighter menu: chaat or snacks, fresh fruit, cold drinks, and a simple lunch if it runs past noon.

The haldi is held a day or two before the wedding, at the bride's and the groom's homes, where turmeric paste is applied to the skin and the ladies sing around the dholki. Food and drinks usually follow, and finger foods with chilled drinks are the common pattern.

Yellow is the theme, so many families echo it on the table: kesar milk, mango lassi, moong dal sweets, kesari rice and jalebi. Be careful with turmeric on clothes and on a white tablecloth, and give guests napkins and a place to wash.

Can one menu serve both a mehndi and a haldi?

Yes, if both functions are small, at home and on the same day or close together: one snack list, one drink list and one small lunch can cover both, and it saves the family a second order.

Split them when the functions are on different days or at different venues, or when the mehndi is an evening event with a crowd. The mehndi can then lean on chaat and fried snacks, while the haldi leans on fruit and a light lunch.

Decide the guest count for each function first, because the haldi is often a smaller family gathering and the mehndi can be the bigger one. The food quantity calculator gives rough cooked quantities for a lunch.

How much food do you need for a mehndi or haldi?

For snacks plan about 200–300 pieces for every 100 guests, which is 2 to 3 pieces a guest, and add the same again if the function replaces a meal.

If you serve a lunch as well, the figures per 100 guests are below, in cooked weight.

Per 100 guestsLunch
Dal10 kg
Sabzi (two dishes)20 kg
Rice10 kg
Rotis300
Sweets10 kg

What should you avoid on a mehndi or haldi menu?

Avoid anything that needs both hands, a knife, or a lot of sauce, because many guests will have henna or turmeric on their hands.

  • Messy gravies and dishes that drip, such as chole bhature, on a plate in the lap
  • Heavy fried food all afternoon with no fresh fruit or drink to balance it
  • Dark sauces and strong-colour drinks near white outfits
  • Cutlery-only dishes for the bride and her friends: choose bite-sized pieces or a spoon
  • A long gap with no drinks, since henna and haldi both run for hours

Questions families ask

What can we serve for a veg mehndi function at home?

A welcome drink, two or three chaat items, mini samosas, paneer tikka, one sweet and masala chai. Serve it in small portions that can be eaten with one hand.

What is a simple haldi ceremony food menu?

Fresh fruit, a snack such as poha or samosa, lassi or kesar milk, and a plain lunch of dal, one sabzi, rice and roti if guests stay past noon. Finish with a yellow sweet such as jalebi or moong dal halwa.

Who pays for the mehndi and haldi food, the bride or groom side?

There is no single rule. Each family usually hosts its own mehndi and haldi at home, and the families agree the split early, so ask both sides before you book a caterer.

Is it better to book a caterer for a mehndi function?

If you expect more than 40 or 50 guests, or the function is in the evening, a caterer saves the family from cooking. For a small afternoon haldi at home, a few chaat and snack trays are often enough.

When are mehndi and haldi held before a Punjabi wedding?

The haldi is usually a day or two before the wedding, and the mehndi often comes the day before or the evening before. The exact order and day depend on the family and the pandit.
