Bhandara menu ideas: vegetarian dishes for a Navratri or temple bhandara

5 min read

The short answer

A good vegetarian bhandara serves one sabzi or dal, one starch and one sweet, usually made without onion and garlic. The classic is puri, aloo sabzi and sooji halwa, with 3 other sets in the table below. Keep it to 3 to 4 items so a long line moves fast, and ask the temple committee about onion and garlic first.

Order: Langar and bhandara catering

What is a bhandara, and what food is served?

A bhandara is a free community meal offered at a temple, a home puja or a festival, and the food is vegetarian prasad that anyone can sit down and eat.

In North India the most common bhandara plate is puri with a potato sabzi and a sweet, often with kala chana and halwa at Navratri and Ashtami. Many committees cook without onion and garlic, so confirm that before you finalise the menu.

Which vegetarian bhandara menus work for a large crowd?

Choose from four proven sets: puri with aloo sabzi and halwa, kadhi chawal with boondi, dal chawal with a dry sabzi, or rajma chawal with a sweet. Each one has a starch, one gravy or dry dish, and one sweet or raita.

Pick a set that holds heat well. Puris go soft if they wait too long, so the puri set suits a short bhandara, and the rice sets suit a long one where serving runs 3 to 4 hours.

What should you leave out of a bhandara menu?

Leave out meat, egg and alcohol always, and leave out onion and garlic if the temple or family asks, because a bhandara is vegetarian prasad.

A bhandara is not a vrat thali, so it may use wheat flour and dal, but a separate vrat plate is a kindness for fasting guests at Navratri. The Navratri vrat thali menu lists what a fasting guest can eat.

  • Onion and garlic, if your temple or family follows satvik practice
  • Meat, egg and alcohol, always
  • Very spicy or very oily dishes, because the crowd includes children and elders
  • Anything that must be eaten the moment it is fried but then sits for an hour

How do you keep a bhandara line moving?

Serve one fixed plate to everyone, with the sweet already on it, and run two or three serving points instead of one.

A fixed plate removes the pause of asking each guest what they want. Use sturdy leaf or paper plates and keep a separate point for elders and children so they do not stand long.

Do you need a caterer for a bhandara?

You need a caterer when the crowd is more than your family or committee can cook for in one day.

Shahi Swaad cooks langar and bhandara food, and you can see what we offer on the langar and bhandara catering page. Tell us the date, the number of people and whether onion and garlic stay out, and we will reply with a menu that fits.

Questions families ask

What is served at a Navratri bhandara?

The usual plate is puri, a potato sabzi, kala chana and sooji halwa, cooked without onion and garlic.

Can a bhandara menu have onion and garlic?

It can, but many temples and families keep it satvik, so ask the committee first and cook without them if you are unsure.

How many dishes should a bhandara have?

Three to four. A starch, one sabzi or dal, and one sweet is enough, and fewer dishes mean a faster line.

Which bhandara menu is easiest for a very large crowd?

Kadhi chawal or dal chawal, because rice and gravy hold their heat for hours, unlike puris.

Is bhandara food the same as langar?

Both are free community meals. Langar is the Sikh gurdwara kitchen tradition, and bhandara is the usual word for a temple or Hindu festival meal.
